About us

What sort of treatment is it?
At the Augustus Clinic we offer a form of treatment that is based on what's called 'The Minnesota Model.' This views alcoholism or drug addiction as a chronic, progressive disease (that is, an involuntary disability – not a choice or a lack of willpower). Treatment approaches based on this model recognise the physical, psychological, social and spiritual nature of the illness and seek to address all these areas through a combination of educational & therapeutic techniques. Treatment is delivered within individual counselling sessions with an experienced alcohol and drug clinician. A comprehensive assessment is completed initially to ascertain the individual’s specific needs and to tailor a programme accordingly.

Do I have to give up altogether?
Many people seek treatment as a way to help them decide whether they want or need to give up forever. Many meet the clinical criteria for substance dependence in which case complete abstinence is medically indicated. At the very least we usually suggest a period of abstinence in order that you are able to obtain the full benefit of treatment and make informed decisions about your future.

How long does treatment last?
At Augustus Clinic it typically involves a month of intensive work, between one and three sessions a week, then ongoing as required. It's intensive because it does involve some major life and attitudinal shifts, but it is on an outpatient basis - so you can continue to live at home and meet primary work and family commitments throughout the period.

What happens after treatment finishes?
That's really up to you. You will be given all the tools you need to continue a life free of the need to use alcohol or drugs if you choose to and will be assisted in establishing a maintenance plan. We also offer individualised follow-up support for as long as required.

What about the people who work there?
We only employ professionally qualified & experienced clinicians, most of whom have themselves experienced - and recovered from - substance dependence. This gives them heightened understanding and they can offer invaluable counsel & support.

What other services are available?
We will conduct comprehensive assessments (in our clinic or offsite where necessary) and provide written or verbal reports for legal and professional purposes. We also offer advice and support for the partners, parents and other loved ones of the individual affected by addiction.
